Overview
When higher education was beyond the reach of the oppressed and economically marginalized young generation in and around Tiruchirappalli region during the national independence, Thanthai Periyar, the visionary leader and social reformer had generously donated 9.65 acres of land in addition to 3.5 lakh rupees to the Government of Tamilnadu with a request to start a Government college in Tiruchirappalli town, to cater to the needs of them in the field of higher education. Utilizing the philanthropic help of Thanthai Periyar, the Government of Tamilnadu started a Government college at Mannarpuram, Tiruchirappalli during the academic year 1965 – 1966 and named it as Periyar EVR College. The Chief Minister of Tamilnadu, Honorable M. Bhakthavatchalam inaugurated the college on 24.08.1965.
