HIHT University, Dehradun was established in 1989 under the aegis of the Himalayan Institute Hospital Trust. It was previously known as Swami Ram Vidhyapeeth. On the recommendation of the Medical Council of India, the Govt. of India granted permission to start the medical college in 1995. In 2000, the college was recognized for the graduate programs. The College started postgraduate programs in various specialities in 2001, with the prior approval of the Medical Council of India and Govt. of India. These postgraduate programs got final recognition from the Medical Council of India in 2004. The Government of India granted Deemed University status to the Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences. The University is established under section 3 of University Grants Commission Act 1956.
